Graphene butterfly, a space age material, spreads its wings

Savings from oil and coal importation

From Clean Technica by Tina Casey | May 14, 2013

Graphene is an exceptionally strong material only an atom thick, just similar to its cousin carbon fiber and is finding a number of exotic materials used in electronics, batteries, and PV.

When subjected to a strong magnetic field, the  atoms form a butterfly effect. This is done by using boron nitride to form a perfect lattice for the butterfly effect.  (We know the use of boron in a recent post on use of boron for stronger L-ion storage(  Please read post on this blog re graphene boron combination in batteries)

Latest use of graphene is on smartphones that are scratch proof.  The product concept of a foldable or rollable smartphone

Wind energy compressed air energy storage facility combo in the Northwest

Savings from oil and coal importation

From Clean Technica by Nathan | May 23, 2013

About 85,000 homes could be powered by compressed air, energy storage facility deep in the porous rocks of the mountains in the Northwest USA.

Wind farms operate best at night when there are no users of the power and therefore could be wasted energy.  This energy could be used to compress air and stored deep under the porous rocks of the mountains;  at daytime when demand rises, the compressed air could be used to run turbines to power electricity.  How ingenious!

Two sites have been discovered that are near the power lines:   the Columbia Hills site and Yakima Mineral site located at Eastern Washington.

The study was made for BPA (Bonneville Power Administration)  13% or 8,600 of the BPA comes from wind hence the study was made.

Change in infrastructure needed to encourage bikership (bikershare)

Savings from oil and coal importation

From Clean Technica by Zachary Shahan | May 24, 2013

There must be a change in infrastructure  in order to encourage ridership and use of bikes.  This was the topic for master thesis of the author .  The author favors off road bike paths, that do not intersect roads to which many bikers object;  (many messengers?)

Now it is becoming clearer that the position of the author is correct.

May I make my own observation in the PHL or MM:

l.  The air pollution levels must be lowered;  otherwise we just kill the bikers;

2. There must be bike lanes;

3.  There must be continuous education of drivers on rights of bikers

The current bike lanes suck:

The ones in a MM city has plenty of safety hazards:   sticking rebars, posts at the bike path, uneven surfaces and located along parked vehicles and the cars doors unexpectedly open causing hazards.

There are many road hazards as well:   steel grating that can catch the wheels and cause crashes falls accidents and injuries

Boron in Graphene for better Li-ion capacity and better batteries

Savings from oil and coal importation

From Clean Technica article by a guest contributor | May 24, 2013

Boron in graphene could improve its capacity to retain Lithium ions for greater Li-ion capacity.  Graphene lattices, a new space material which could have very dense storage capacity could not do so as is, but researchers/scientists at Rice University found a way to increase capacity by adding Boron. The lead scientist is Dr. Boris  Yakobson.  Graphene's performance is 2x that of graphite, the traditional material used for Li-ion batteries.

Yakobson and first Rice researcher Yuanye Liu estimated the lithiated graphene boron capacity to be  714 milliamps per hour per gram or 2, 120 watt hours per kg. when paired with commercial boron lithium oxide

The next step is how to commercialize the idea, ie produce the lithiated graphene/boron in large quantity

Why are we making these posts?

Savings from oil and coal importation

This site now consist of over a 100 articles and is ranked at l,200,000 in the whole world. This just used to be a notebook on this new industry and business The articles include:

l.  Various green, clean, and renewable technologies worldwide

2.  Latest feed from clean tecnica, environmental leader, green tech newsletter

3.  Upsides and downsides in the renewable energy business;  what are the pitfalls to watch for

4.  Best practices in green and renewable energy

5.  Public sector policy and decisions on renewables/green energy.

6.  Latest technology on green energy:    solar leaf, EV, liquid battery, supercapacitor, energy storage and more.

There must be tens of thousands of article on this subject.  I tried to get the best and the latest

This way, the renewable entrepreneurs can navigate their way properly into the business landscape, the regulators can have enlightened mindset when they make decisions on solar

UK's Greenest Building Gets Go Ahead

The Norwich Enterprise Centre at the University of East Anglia will be the first commercial building in the United Kingdom to receive a Passivhaus and Breeam ‘Outsanding’ rating, and the building’s architects — Architype — have secured planning permission to begin construction. Norwich councillors gave the go ahead for what has been dubbed “the greenest building in the UK”, a building which will provide academic and office space for the low-carbon sector. Top Cleantech Stories Of The Day! - latest America's Plant, Tesla

Top cleantech news of the day from CleanTechnica, the world's #1 cleantech or clean energy website:

Excerpts:

New Low Cost Solar Cell Assembles Itself

The price of solar panels has been sinking like a stone for the past few years, and that could be just the beginning of a low cost solar power future. When that happens, it will be partly due to the development of solar cells made of organic materials, which are less efficient but far cheaper than the current gold standard, the metalloid silicon. With that in mind let’s take a look at the latest news … Read More

Atomic-Scale Investigations Solve Key Puzzle of LED Efficiency

Guest Post by Brookhaven National Laboratory. From the high-resolution glow of flat screen televisions to light bulbs that last for years, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) continue to transform technology. The celebrated efficiency and versatility of LEDs—and other solid-state technologies including laser diodes and solar photovoltaics—make them increasingly popular. Their full potential, however, remains untapped, in part because the semiconductor alloys that make these devices work continue to puzzle scientists. A contentious controversy surrounds the high intensity … Read More

Fox #Fail — Bashes Tesla For Years, Now Forgets All About That! (And Lies Through Teeth)

Reposted from EV Obsession by Zachary Shahan. FOX NEWS ("news," I should write) is so lame I'm not sure if it's sad or funny. It bashed the heck out of Tesla for years due to the fact that the company won a $450 million government loan. It equated it to the tiny percentage of loan-receiving companies that have failed and repeatedly called it a failure (despite Tesla's numerous groundbreaking successes). Tesla has just paid back … Read More

Graph Of The Day: Super-Sizing Rooftop Solar Systems

This post first appeared on RenewEconomy It was just a few years ago when a modest 1.5kW rooftop solar system – the equivalent of around six panels – was the norm for Australian households. How that is changing. Already, the average size of … Read More
